Atlantic Indoor Association Scholarship
3-28-15 Mary Bynum (Guard and Bassoon) was awarded the Atlantic Indoor Association’s Devin Mickle Memorial Scholarship during the AIA Circuit Championships held in Raleigh, NC on March 28. The Atlantic Indoor Association mission is to promote youth education in the performing arts, including elements of music, choreography and theatre in color guard, percussion and winds units. The AIA Scholarship is awarded annually based on academic excellence, extracurricular activities and school and community involvement. Congratulations Mary on your outstanding accomplishments!

Butler University School of Music Scholarship
3-16-15 Joshua Scarborough (Junior – Clarinet) has been awarded the JCA Dean’s Scholarship to Butler University’s School of Music. The Jordan College of the Arts Dean’s Scholarship is a full music scholarship to Butler University. Josh is one of the first recipients of this prestigious award. The award was announced at the Honor Band of America concert on March 14, 2015 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Congratulations Josh on your outstanding accomplishments!

All-State Honors Band
03-16-15 Congratulations to Matt Baker (Tuba), Caitlin Cassidy (French Horn), and Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet) on earning positions, through audition, in the 2015 North Carolina All-State Honors Band. Prior to auditioning for All-State Honors Band, students must first earn one of the top chair positions in their All-District Honor Band. Congratulations to Matt, Caitlin and Josh on their outstanding musical achievements. They will be attending the NC All-State Honors Band Clinic May 1-3 at UNC-Greensboro.

“Music for All” Honor Band of America
2-11-15 Josh Scarborough (Clarinet) has been selected, by DVD audition, to participate in the 2015 Music for All Honor Band of America, part of the Music for All National Festival, occurring in Indianapolis March 11-14, 2015. Music for All presents a life-changing honor ensemble experience for the nation’s outstanding high school concert band, orchestra and jazz musicians. As part of the Music for All Festival, students perform on a national stage and experience world-class learning and performance opportunities with distinguished conductors, artists and master teachers.

UNC-G Honor Bands
01-22-15 Seven Athens Drive HS Band students auditioned and were invited to attend the 26th Annual Carolina Band Festival at UNC-Greensboro February 12-14. Yen Doan (Tuba) (not pictured), Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet) and Jack Timothy (Euphonium) earned positions with the UNC-G 11-12 Honors Symphonic Band. Sterling Goodwin (Percussion), Julia Hader (Flute), Kelley Harrell (Clarinet), and Lauren Howard (Oboe) earned positions with the UNC-G 9-10 Honors Concert Band. Students were selected after submitting an application and recording. Over 300 applications were received from the five-state area. Both concerts will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, February 14th, at Aycock Auditorium on the UNC-G campus in Greensboro.

All-District Honors Bands
01-19-15 Through audition, 12 Athens Drive HS Band students earned positions with the 2015 All-District Honor Bands. Matt Baker (Tuba), Caitlin Cassidy (French Horn), Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet), Emma Vtipil (French Horn) and Matt Wakeford (Trumpet) earned positions in the 11-12 Wind Ensemble. Sterling Goodwin (Snare), Kelley Harrell (Clarinet), Lauren Holtshouser (Trumpet) and Lauren Howard (Oboe) earned positions in the 9-10 Wind Ensemble. Marc Bennett (Trombone), Jack Timothy (Baritone) and Alyssa Quackenbush (Oboe) earned positions in the 9-12 Symphonic Band. Matt Baker (Tuba), Caitlin Cassidy (French Horn), Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet), Sterling Goodwin (Snare) and Lauren Howard (Oboe) also qualified to audition for the All-State Honors Bands. The All-District Honors Bands will convene at Sanderson High School in Raleigh January 30-31, 2015.

Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble
11-15-14 Matt Wakeford (Trumpet) has earned, through audition, a position in the 2014-2015 Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble. The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is for advanced musicians in grades 8-12 and is one of two jazz ensembles sponsored by the Philharmonic Association. Fall concert is November 16 at Cary Arts Center Theatre and April 19, 2015 at NC History Museum.

Triangle Youth Brass Band
11-15-14 Matthew Baker (Tuba), Marc Bennett (Trombone), Sterling Goodwin (Percussion), Lauren Holsthouser (Trumpet) and Matt Wakeford (Trumpet) have earned positions, through audition, with the 2014-2015 Triangle Youth Brass Band. The Triangle Youth Brass Band’s mission is to provide high quality musical performance opportunities for talented young musicians. Their first concert is in December. Remaining concerts are March 2015 and May 2015 at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. Congratulations to these fine musicians!

Pandemonium Brass Quintet
09-25-14 Matt Baker (Tuba), Caitlin Cassidy (Horn) and Matt Wakeford (Trumpet) are participants in the Pandemonium Brass Quintet which was formed in the fall of 2014. PBQ provides an intensive chamber music experience for talented brass musicians from the local area and aims to compliment their members’ large ensemble experience with challenges that chamber music brings. Tony Granados, Tubist with the Boylan Bridge Brass Quintet, provides coaching for the group. The Pandemonium Brass Quintet performs Sunday, October 5, 2014 in the Sertoma Amphitheatre at Bond Park in Cary, NC as part of the Triangle Brass Band’s 2014-15 season opener, “A Sousa Spectacular”.

Triangle Youth Philharmonic
09-22-14 Amith Mandavilli (Percussion) and Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet) have earned positions, through audition, in the 2014-2015 Triangle Youth Philharmonic . The Triangle Youth Philharmonic is the most advanced ensemble sponsored by the Philharmonic Association. Concerts dates are November 23, 2014, December 14, 204 and April 26, 2015. Concerts are held at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. Congratulations to Amith and Josh on their outstanding musical achievements!

Triangle Brass Band
09-01-14 Matthew Baker (Tuba) has been chosen to participate in the prestigious Triangle Brass Band. The Triangle Brass Band is a British style brass band located in Cary, NC, composed of the finest volunteer brass and percussion players from the greater Research Triangle Park area. Members of this group come from a variety of backgrounds, including school band directors and college faculty. The Triangle Brass Band’s 2014-2015 Concert Season runs from October 5, 2015 through June 27, 2015. Congratulations to Matt on this high achieving musical honor!

Triangle Youth Symphony
08-16-14 Melodie Chang (Flute), Theo Groelle (Tuba), Ryan Murray (Tuba), Alyssa Quackenbush (Oboe) and Emma Vtipil (French Horn) have earned positions, through audition, in the 2014-2015 Triangle Youth Symphony. Melodie Chang (Flute) will be playing the violin. The Triangle Youth Symphony is an advanced ensemble sponsored by the Philharmonic Association. Concert dates November 25, 2014 and April 28, 2015. Concerts are held at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. Congratulations to these students on their outstanding musical achievements!

NAfME All-National Honor Ensemble
07-30-14 Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet) was selected by audition to participate in the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) All-National Honor Ensemble. The NAfME All-National Honor Ensembles represent the top performing high school musicians in the United States. Ensembles perform at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. To be eligible for audition, students must have been accepted to their state’s 2013-2014 All-State Honors Band. Congratulations to Josh on his outstanding national level achievement!

International Euphonium Tuba Festival
06-28-14 Matthew Baker (Tuba) earned 1st Place in the International Tuba Competition for student musicians ages 18 and under at the International Euphonium Tuba Festival held June 22-28, 2014 at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. The IET Festival Solo Competition aims to promote the growth and development of euphonium and tuba players around the world. Congratulations to Matt on his outstanding international achievement!
