Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble
11-17-15 Matt Wakeford (Trumpet) has earned, through audition, a position in the 2015-2016 Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble. The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is for advanced musicians in grades 8-12 and is sponsored by the Philharmonic Association. They will likely be performing at the UNC Jazz Festival in February 2016, and can also be seen on April 17, 2016 at 2:00p.m. at the NC Museum of History. TYJE was one of 15 jazz bands selected out of about 100 Jazz at Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington contest entries received from the U.S. and Canada – for each of the three designated regions, only one community band is selected (the other 4 are high school jazz bands). TYJE will travel to NYC the first week of May to compete in the finals and participate in workshops with the JALC Orchestra (Wynton Marsalis and other top jazz musicians).
U.S. Army All-American Marching Band
11-06-15 Matthew Baker (Tuba) has been chosen to participate in the prestigious U.S. Army All-Amerian Marhing Band. Selected by the National Association for Music Education in cooperation with All American Games and Drum Corps International, the band features the 125 top marching band members from across the United States and will perform at the Army All-American Bowl, the nation’s premier high school All-American game, on January 9, 2016 at 1:00 PM Eastern. The event will be broadcast live nationally on NBC and live across the world to soldiers deployed overseas in the U.S. Army.
Triangle Youth Brass Band
11-22-15 Through audition, the following were chosen for the 2015-2016 Triangle Youth Brass Band: Lauren Holtshouser (Trumpet – position Principal Cornet), Kevin Day (Tuba). The TYBB is a British Style Brass Band composed of students throughout the Triangle. In addition to performing in concerts throughout the Triangle during the school year, they will also be competing in the North American Brass Band Championships in Ft. Wayne, Indiana in early April 2016.
All-State Jazz Honor Band
03-20-16 Matt Wakeford (Trumpet) placed 4th chair in the All-State Jazz Honor Band. The clinic will be held at the NC School of Math and Science in Durham on April 8th-9th. The concert will be on Saturday the 9th, time TBA.
All-District Honors Bands
02-23-16 Through audition, 11 Athens Drive HS Band students earned positions with the 2016 All-District Honor Bands. Julia Hader (Flute), Kelley Harrell (Clarinet), Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet), Matt Wakeford (Trumpet), Lauren Holtshouser (Trumpet), Caitlin Cassidy (French Horn), Emma Vtipil (French Horn), Westley Springthorpe (French horn), Tyrone Williamson (Trumpet), Andrea Borrallo (Flute), and Bryan Benson (Bassoon).
UNC-G Honor Bands
01-23-16 Four Athens Drive HS Band students auditioned and were invited to attend the 27th Annual Carolina Band Festival at UNC-Greensboro February 18-20. Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet), Kelley Harrell (Clarinet), Danielle Puccio (Clarinet), and Abbey Watkins (Flute) (not pictured).
